istoric Gardens of Newburyport is a charitable organization formed to encourage the appreciation and conservation of historic gardens,
landscapes and open spaces, both private and public, in Newburyport and
its surrounding communities.
We are very excited to announce that our book, Gardens of the New Republic: Fashioning the Landscapes of High Street Newburyport, Massachusetts, has just won the 2005 Massachusetts Historical Commission Preservation award.
Here are some other nice things that people have said about the book:
ome of the most engaging chapters in America's story are set in the leafy confines of our nation's historic gardens. Allowing us to peek into the secluded gardens of Newburyport and introducing us to the people who created and nurtured them over the decades, this handsome volume is a compelling reminder of the richness of our legacy from the past - and of the importance of keeping that legacy alive for the future.

erhaps no New England street has received a handsomer horticultural tribute than "Gardens of the New Republic: Fashioning the Landscapes of High Street, Newburyport, Massachusetts," by Lucinda A. Brockway and Lindsay Cavanagh, photography by Sally Chandler (Bright Sky Press $30). It traces the history of High Street's Federal Period gardens with ample research and illustrations, and debuted at the 25th anniversary of the well-loved annual Garden Tour of the Historical Society of Old Newburyport in June.

s the State Historic Preservation Office, the Massachusetts Historical Commission sincerely appreciates all efforts to preserve the Commonwealth's valuable historic and cultural assets. This project, however, demonstrates a commitment to historic preservation above and beyond what is normally expected. It is for this significant effort that we have selected Gardens of the New Republic project for this distinctive honor, a 2005 Massachusetts Historical Commission Preservation Award.
